Pennsylvania Democrat Wants Slot Revenue for Airport Debt

PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: "State House Democratic Whip Mike Veon wants to designate a portion of the revenue raised from proposed slots gambling in Pennsylvania to help cut Pittsburgh International Airport debt and preserve the US Airways hub.

"Veon, of Beaver County, is expected to unveil his plan at a news conference this morning at the airport.

"He is proposing to earmark 1 percent of revenues generated by slots at racetracks in Allegheny, Beaver or Washington counties to pay down the $673 million in airport debt.

"The proposal would raise as much as $30 million a year to help reduce the debt, or roughly the same amount US Airways has asked state and county political leaders to contribute toward that effort.

"…The Veon proposal would not require the use of any new or existing taxes, but still faces significant hurdles. State House and Senate leaders have yet to agree on a bill that would allow slots gambling in Pennsylvania. They have disagreed on the number and types of venues allowed…"
