Pennsylvania Court Upholds Gaming Act23 June 2005HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Pennsylvania Express-Times: "Rejecting a constitutional challenge that threatened to undo what is expected to become a $3 billion industry, Pennsylvania's highest court Wednesday upheld the Gaming Act, the state's 11-month-old slot-machine gambling law. "The decision clears the way for Act 72, a companion law that established a program through which an estimated $1 billion a year in slots revenue would be funneled into property-tax reductions for 3 million homeowners. "The Gaming Act legalizes as many as 61,000 slot machines at 14 locations in Pennsylvania. The state has projected it will take in $1 billion in slots revenue, and much of it is to be given to local school districts for property-tax cuts. "…The funding mechanism for Act 72 was put in jeopardy when gambling opponents challenged the Gaming Act in court, arguing lawmakers had exceeded their authority by legalizing slot machines, in effect creating an entire gambling industry.
