Pennsylvania County Votes Against Gambling

PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Morning Call: "Northampton County Council took a position Thursday against gambling. In a 5-3-1 vote, council said it does not believe gambling would be an appropriate part of the county's future.

"Councilwoman Mary Ensslin said it was important for council to address the controversial topic because people in the community asked it to.

"…She said council is not telling other local governments what to think of gambling. Rather, it is asking them to think about it, and to listen to what their residents want.

"Dissenting council members said council had no business taking a stance because it has no authority over whether slot machine parlors come to the county.

"…A state law passed last year permits slot machines at up to 14 locations, and slots parlors have been proposed in Bethlehem and Palmer Township.

"The state Gaming Control Board will decide who gets the licenses. Municipal leaders will decide where the parlors can be built…"
