Pennsylvania Companies Join Lottery Program

31 August 2004

YORK, Pennsylvania – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Tom's Convenience Stores, part of the Shipley Energy Group, and Memorial Hospital, two companies based in the York area, have pledged to purchase Lottery instant tickets for employees in support of the Lottery's Golden Opportunities Employee Rewards Program.

Secretary of Revenue Gregory C. Fajt, Secretary of Aging Nora Dowd Eisenhower and Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Lottery Ed Mahlman announced the companies' commitment to the innovative Lottery program today at a news conference at White Rose Senior Center. They encouraged other local businesses to participate.

"The leaders of Tom's Stores, Memorial Hospital and other companies that have joined the Golden Opportunities Employee Rewards Program are community- minded forward thinkers," said Secretary Fajt. "They recognize that the Golden Opportunities Program can increase productivity while at the same time making a contribution to the community."

Governor Edward G. Rendell introduced the Golden Opportunities Program last year, challenging businesses across Pennsylvania to purchase Lottery instant tickets in bulk, on an ongoing basis and as often as possible, to reward employees for jobs well done. Debra Goodling, President of Shipley Stores, and Karl Wentzel, Marketing Manager for Shipley Stores, represented Tom's Convenience Stores at the event, as did Memorial Hospital's Vice-President of Business Development, Michael Hady, and Manager of Community Relations and Development, Josette Myers.

"We are continually looking for new and interesting ways to reward our employees," said Goodling. "The Golden Opportunities Employee Rewards Program provided the perfect solution for our upcoming sales incentive contest."

Memorial Hospital decided to join the Golden Opportunities Program when executives realized the program could benefit their business on a number of levels. "Lottery ticket rewards can motivate employees, increase productivity and improve our bottom line while allowing our company to contribute to the welfare of seniors across the state," said Hady.

The Pennsylvania Lottery remains the only Lottery that designates all proceeds to programs that benefit older residents. More than one-third of the cost of each Lottery ticket is dedicated to such programs.

"By supporting the Pennsylvania Lottery, businesses are in turn supporting more than 2.4 million older residents of Pennsylvania and helping them to live happy, healthy and active lives," said Secretary Dowd Eisenhower.

Any business with headquarters or locations in Pennsylvania can participate in the Golden Opportunities Employee Rewards Program. Company officials interested in joining the program can call 1-800-278-9725 or visit the program's Web site at http://www.pagoldenopportunities.com for more information.

Since its inception more than 32 years ago, the Lottery has contributed more than $13.8 billion to programs that include property tax and rent rebates; free and reduced-fare transit; the low-cost prescription drug programs PACE and PACENET; and the 52 Area Agencies on Aging, including 650 full- and part-time senior centers throughout Pennsylvania. The Lottery reminds its players to play responsibly. Players must be 18 or older.
