Pennsylvania Board Wants More Oversight26 September 2006PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune Review: "If Western Pennsylvania gets a slot machine license Wednesday, it likely will come with pages of conditions designed to ease fears it might not make enough money to survive. "As gambling regulators prepare to vote on a slots license for The Meadows harness racing track in Washington County, officials have been talking with the applicant, Las Vegas-based Millennium Gaming, about extra standards it might have to meet. "The state Gaming Control Board could demand more oversight of casino operations, set a strict deadline for the operator to build a permanent slots parlor or push the applicant to reduce its debt, experts said. "…Any new requirements likely would be designed, he said, 'to make (the board members) comfortable' about giving The Meadows a license. "…A gambling board study, by PricewaterhouseCoopers, shows slots at The Meadows might make half of what Millennium Gaming expects. "…Because the slots law was designed to save the horse and harness racing industries, it would be hard for regulators to deny The Meadows a casino license without solid justification, said Denis Rudd, tourism professor at Robert Morris University…" |
