Pennsylvania Board Cool to Proposal3 June 2005PENNSYLVANIA – As reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "A proposal to divide the state into five regions to give more companies a shot at supplying slot machines to casinos is creating some discord within the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. "A working group set up by the board to develop draft regulations for manufacturers and suppliers has recommended against the idea, saying there's little evidence to show that such a plan would actually create more jobs or give smaller or women-owned or minority-owned businesses a better shot at the action. "The recommendation is not binding and has not been adopted by the full board. But it created the most discussion yesterday during the gaming control board meeting at Carnegie Mellon University, its first in the Pittsburgh region. "Board member Jeffrey Coy, a former Democratic state legislator, advanced the proposal, saying a regional approach would make it easier for smaller companies and women and minorities to compete for work as suppliers. "…While Coy saw the proposal as a way to spread the wealth, Lynn D. Stelle, a gaming control board consultant, told members yesterday there may not be enough work available in smaller regions outside of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia to make the plan economically viable for businesses…" |
