Pataki Looks to Bush for Help

ALBANY, New York – As reported by the Albany Times-Union: "Governor George Pataki is demanding the Bush administration decide if it is going to do something about the 'illegal' and potentially 'criminal activity' at Turning Stone Casino, according to a letter sent by the governor's chief counsel.

"In March, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the casino, operated by the Oneida Indian Nation in the Oneida County town of Verona since 1993, is on nonsovereign, taxable land.

"Pataki's top lawyer, Richard Platkin, wrote to the National Indian Gaming Commission on Sept. 16 saying the federal government must decide if it is going to take action about the situation at Turning Stone.

"…The tribe has since asked the federal government to place land it acquired, including the casino site, in trust as Indian territory…"
