Panel OKs Casino Protection Bill1 February 2005JACKSON, Mississippi -- As reported by the Sun Herald: "The House Gaming Committee on Monday passed a bill aimed at protecting casinos and the state budget from devastation from hurricanes. "The bill, by Rep. Danny Guice, R-Ocean Springs, would allow casinos to build permanent structures, such as pilings, underneath their casino barges. "The bill does not allow casinos - restricted to water by state law - to come onshore, a move many lawmakers in counties without casinos fear would allow the spread of gambling beyond the Coast and a few spots along the Mississippi River where voters have approved it. "...The bill will now go to the full House, joining another bill the Gaming Committee passed last week to allow off-track horse race betting at casinos. "Talk of allowing Coast casinos more protection from storms was reignited last summer after a near-miss from Hurricane Ivan..." |
