Palm Springs Deal Sparks Lawsuit5 November 2003PALM SPRINGS, California -- As reported by the Desert Sun: ``A group calling itself Citizens for Local Government Accountability is suing the city of Palm Springs and its redevelopment agency over a land deal with the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. ``The group says the agreement violates California law by giving public money to a gambling casino. ``City officials deny the allegation, saying the deal, which puts a joint parking lot on the 'Prairie Schooner' parcel between the new Spa Resort Casino and the city-owned convention center, does not constitute financial assistance. ``The group, described in the Oct. 29 complaint as composed of 'residents and taxpayers in the city of Palm Springs and throughout the Coachella Valley,' asks that the court void the city's agreement with the tribe. ``The lawsuit, filed in Riverside County Superior Court, asked that the agreement be thrown out on the grounds that it violates state redevelopment law by aiding a gambling enterprise and was approved without proper environmental assessment…" |
