Palau Congress Passes Casino Bill

KOROR, Palau – As reported by the Pacific Daily News: "The Palau National Congress has passed a bill that would legalize casino gambling on a sparsely populated main island here, although it appears legislators will need a veto override to make it law.

"The push for a casino on Angaur, population 150 at its summer peak, follows similar efforts in other Pacific nations and territories, most recently Guam. Here, as elsewhere, proponents say casino gambling would boost tax revenues, diversify the tourism plate and further economic development in a limited market.

"…But President Tommy Remengesau said he opposes the bill because gambling runs counter to the image of Palau as a smattering of pristine, mostly uninhabited islands where world-class ecotourism and traditional culture can be enjoyed without intrusion.

"…The president said Palau already has a growing visitor industry and should concentrate on generating more air traffic.

"…The bill was transmitted to President Tommy Remengesau last week. He has until Nov. 25 to act on it. Remengesau can veto it or send it back with suggested changes. If he does nothing, the bill becomes law…"
