Pakistan Bookies Bet on Lottery Show31 May 2004LAHORE, Pakistan – As reported by the Pakistan Daily Times: "The city's bookies have started taking bets on an Indian television show that is becoming increasingly popular, Daily Times has learnt. "The bookies, locally known as 'dealers', accept bids over the phone or at local offices for three numbers drawn on the Lottery Show, broadcast live by Indian channel Zee at 10.00pm on weekdays. Punters can make bets until around 9.00pm. "… There are believed to be more than 100 dealers taking bets for the illegal business in various parts of the city including Sandha, Samanabad, Muslim Town, Ichhra, Bhati Gate, Gulshan-e-Ravi, Texali Gate and Township. Most of the dealers were previously involved in the prize bond gambling syndicate which was big when Nawaz Sharif was prime minister. "Punters say a particularly attractive feature of gambling on the Lottery Show is that the dealers cannot rig the outcome. The draw is broadcast live on the show, with balls numbered 0 to 9 being selected by a random mechanism in glass boxes…" |
