Pagcor Disowns School Gambling21 June 2004PHILIPPINES -- As reported by ABS-CBNNews: "The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) disowns any link to illicit sports-betting operations in schools and universities and reiterates its support to President Arroyo's drive to clamp down on illegal gambling. "'These reported cases of illegal sports betting are the handiwork of gambling syndicates, not Pagcor,' stressed Dodie King, Pagcor press relations and advertising chief. "Gambling syndicates, King explained, infiltrate schools and universities by hiring bookies, who are usually students themselves. Bookies approach potential victims and solicit wagers with the promise of great winnings in return. "...Pagcor, as the sole agency authorized to regulate all games of chance in the country, upholds a commitment to promote responsible gaming. "...Online sports betting offered by Pagcor is conducted in duly authorized Internet sports betting stations, where the same strict regulatory procedures are followed..." |
