Originators of law banning casino employees from office in Atlantic City take second look

TRENTON, New Jersey -- As reported by The Press of Atlantic City: "Lawmakers built firewalls between the casinos and Atlantic City government 25 years ago in part because of a federal corruption scandal that threatened confidence in the newly opened casino resorts.

"But some of the same officials in power at the dawn of the resort's casino era say that it may be time to allow casino worker to hold local office.

"...The ban in state conflicts-of-interest law effectively blocks about 9,000 casino workers from holding local elective office in Atlantic City.

"... A narrowly written proposal to allow them to hold office in Atlantic City was approved by the General Assembly last month but has run into snags in state Senate, where Sen. Jim Whelan, D-Atlantic, sponsors it..."
