Oregon's Casino Gamble Pays Off

FLORENCE, Oregon – As reported by the Register Guard: "Oregon's newest casino exceeded tribal expectations during its first year, and if all goes as planned, expansions are likely.

"That's the message officials with the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians will deliver today at a luncheon celebrating the Three Rivers Casino's one-year anniversary.

"While not disclosing profit or attendance figures, tribal economic development director Bob Garcia said the casino did well in its first year, allowing the tribe to pay off a $720,000 loan it took out to buy the casino property and pay down the $13 million debt it carries for the project's construction. There are now more than 43,000 members signed up for the casino's 'Player's Club,' a frequent flier-like program that rewards gamblers for the time they put in at Three Rivers.

"…Profits have yet to be directed toward a community benefit fund, however. The tribe and state of Oregon negotiated for an eventual 6 percent of net profits to be given to charity. However, that doesn't kick in unless the casino operations expand to include such games as craps and roulette…"
