Oregon Tribal Casino Plan Attacked20 May 2005OREGON – As reported by the Oregonian: "Rep. David Wu, D-Ore., launched an abortive attack against a tribal casino planned for the Columbia River Gorge, proposing Thursday to outlaw Las Vegas-style gambling outside established reservation boundaries. "Wu's sweeping amendment to the annual Interior Department spending bill was ruled out of order -- but not before it drew an agitated response from Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., who supports building the casino in Cascade Locks in his district. "…The floor maneuver was the second time Wu has tried to stop the 500,000-square-foot casino planned by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. "…In his floor speech, Wu said he opposes off-reservation casinos in general and repeated his earlier concern about potential environmental harm to the gorge. "…Wu's amendment was ruled out of order because members are not supposed to attach legislative matters to spending bills. Confronted by Rep. Charles Taylor, R-N.C., the bill's floor manager, Wu quickly conceded defeat…" |
