Oregon off-reservation casino gets hearing

CASCADE LOCKS, Oregon -- As reported by the Oregonian: "The sign on Cascade Locks' only hardware store says it all: "Closed for Season." Flush times from decades ago, during the construction of Interstate 84 and the Bonneville Dam, are a memory here.

"...Such was the backdrop for a hearing Monday night when supporters of Oregon's first off-reservation tribal casino got to tell the federal government how it could save both the town and the tribe that wants to build it. Opponents gathered to have their say as well.

"...The city, Hood River County and Gov. Ted Kulongoski all support the Confederated Tribes of Warms Springs' plans to build a $389 million casino and hotel complex in a mostly vacant industrial park.

"But the decision ultimately rests with the U.S. Department of the Interior, which is holding a series of hearings to collect comments on the casino's environmental impact..."
