Oregon Group Files Second Suit to Block Casino

FLORENCE, Oregon – As reported by the Associated Press: "Anti-casino activists have filed a second lawsuit to block a new Indian casino on the Oregon coast, two days after tribal officials broke ground on the project.

"Current plans by the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Siuslaw and Lower Umpqua Indians feature a 16,000-square-foot casino on a marshy tract east of town. The $12 million project will employ 120 people, and feature 225 slot machines, six blackjack tables and a full-service restaurant.

"…Casino opponents argue that former Gov. John Kitzhaber could not sign a gaming compact with the tribes because the state constitution prohibits casino gambling.

"…On Nov. 25 the Oregon Supreme Court unanimously dismissed the group's first lawsuit…"
