Oregon developers have new campaign team11 January 2008OREGON -- By the Oregonian: "The Lake Oswego entrepreneurs who hope to build a casino at the old greyhound track in Wood Village have a new campaign team and are dangling a new enticement to voters. They want to put a cut of the gambling revenues into children's health care, now that voters have rejected raising the tobacco tax to help provide more coverage for kids. "According to knowledgeable sources, veteran Portland political consultant Mark Wiener - who has deep ties to the Democratic political establishment in the state - is coming on board to oversee the ballot measure campaign. "...Wiener reportedly had a hand in tweaking the latest version of the measure, which would still call for 25 percent of gambling profits to be turned over to the state and local governments. "...The measure faces heated opposition from tribal casinos, as well as restaurant and tavern owners who have video gambling machines from the state Lottery. There's also some opposition in East Multnomah County from local officials who worry about the impact of a huge gambling operation on their area..." |
