Oregon casino report release uncertain

OREGON – As reported by the Columbian: "…The final environmental impact study on the Cowlitz casino might not be finished this month, although that could depend on the meaning of 'final.'

"The document won't be kept under wraps until after the Interior Department decides whether to take the 152-acre casino site west of La Center into trust for the Cowlitz Tribe.

"…Uncertainty over what the federal government would do and when it would do it increased last week when Gerald Henrikson, the BIA's regional environmental scientist who overseas the Cowlitz project, said the bureau's consultant would complete the final impact study before the end of the month. He also said the document would not be released until a trust decision had been made.

"George Skibine, director of the Interior Department's Office of Indian Gaming in Washington, D.C., contradicted much of that information in an e-mail he sent to The Columbian Friday…"
