Opera House Saloon & Casino Approved for Gaming License

LAS VEGAS - The Nevada Gaming Control Board on Wednesday voted 3-0 to recommend the granting of a two-year limited gaming license to the general manager of the Opera House Saloon & Casino in North Las Vegas.

The vote came after the panel asked the executive, Kevin Mahoney, a series of tough questions centering on his involvement in a December 2000 traffic accident.

Mahoney, whose father owns the Opera House and Mahoney's Silver Nugget casinos, admitted that he left the scene of an accident he caused on U.S. Highway 95.

Panel member Bobby Siller asked why Mahoney left the accident scene.

Mahoney said he had been scared of the possible consequences, but noted that he'd learned from his mistake.

"You won't do this again?," Siller asked.

"Nope," Mahoney said. "You have my word on that."

The license recommendation is slated to be considered by the Nevada Gaming Commission at its May 16 meeting in Las Vegas.

Mahoney would have to reapply for his license in two years if the commission approves the control board's recommendation.
