Opening Day Set for Evangeline Downs

OPELOUSAS, Louisiana – As reported by the Associated Press: "Last week was a big one for Evangeline Downs Racetrack: It got permission for thoroughbred sales, and it began moving from Carencro.

"'It has been a huge undertaking. We are ahead of schedule. We couldn't wait to come to town,' said David Yount, Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino executive director of racing operations.

"…On Wednesday, the Livestock Sanitary board voted 13-1 to give the track a license to sell thoroughbreds.

"…Tom Early, president of the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association, and Laverne Perry, executive secretary of the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association, both supported the track's application.

"Yount said sales at the track will help bring people to the slots that in turn will help racing purses. Fifteen cents on every dollar collected by slots goes directly back to racing purses at Evangeline Downs.

"…The first race in Opelousas is Feb. 5.

" 'The Quarter Horse Association is moving the Mardi Gras Futurity from New Orleans to Opelousas. The trials will be held here,' Yount said.

"The 20-day quarter horse season begins Feb. 28. On April 7, the first thoroughbred racing season at the new track will begin and continue through Labor Day…"
