Ontario's Casino Plans Criticized

16 February 2005

ONTARIO – As reported by the Windsor Star: "Ontario's opposition parties lashed out Tuesday against the Liberal government's decision to spend $400 million to expand Casino Windsor.

"'We need a plan with more hospital beds, not hotel beds,' Conservative Leader John Tory said. Monday's unveiling in Windsor included plans for a second upscale casino hotel.

"Tory called on the Liberal government to postpone the expansion of the casino until the Liberals can show how they will fix the health care system.

"…NDP Leader Howard Hampton said he finds it interesting the Liberals have found money to expand the casino, but can't fund education and health care properly.

"…Don Pister, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation spokesman, refused to say whether the OLGC has any money in reserves to pay for capital projects or if the cost of the project might result in a decline of revenue going to the province. He also wouldn't say whether the Crown corporation would take out a loan to pay for the project…"
