Ontario Mayor Wants Share of Neighbor's Gaming Revenues

NORTH BAY, Ontario – As reported by the North Bay Nugget: "While opposed to any casino initiative for North Bay, Mayor Vic Fedeli says he won't challenge a neighbouring community's bid for a gaming facility.

"But Fedeli said the city should not support a casino in a neighbouring community without North Bay sharing in the revenue.

"'I don't believe North Bay has the right to stand in the way of any other community's economic development plans,' said Fedeli, responding to a pitch to area municipalities for regional support for a casino in Callander.

"'But this is not a decision that the mayor makes . . . This is a decision that is made as a council,' said Fedeli, noting a casino in Callander would have social costs in North Bay.

"The province is considering the best locations for new casinos as part of a six-month review of Ontario's gaming industry.

"… North Bay council all but rejected the casino concept before the province put a moratorium on gambling expansion in 1998 and again in 2000…"
