Ontario Man Wins Ultimate Poker Challenge

27 September 2005

POINT EDWARD, Ontario -– (PRESS RELEASE) -- Luck paved the way for Point Edward's hottest poker player who won the top prize yesterday at the first Ultimate Poker Challenge, held at Point Edward Charity Casino near Sarnia.

Michael Brown, 38, of Belleville Ontario, won a grand total of $68,563 by taking first place at the poker tournament, which ran September 20 to September 25, 2005. About 100 hushed spectators waited for Brown to play his final hand, a flush, to end the week-long competition. "When they played my favourite Nickleback song, I new it was time to flop my flush."

After only playing for about a year, Brown entered the tournament on a whim when he saw the event advertised, and bought the very last ticket in the sold out competition. "I didn't think I'd get very far," he said, "I didn't even bring a change of clothes."

Brown was among 750 participants who signed up and competed for a total of $465,200 in prizes. He plans to use his winnings to pay off some debts and build a new house in the spring.

Other big winners of the Ultimate Poker Challenge include:

- 2nd Place: Chad Lewis, London, ON $39,081

- 3rd Place: Chris Adams, Corunna, ON $19,883

- Top Overall Points: Ian Gare, Wyoming, ON $11,048

Point Edward Charity Casino is owned and operated by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. Since opening on April 18, 2000, the facility has attracted more than 5.2 million visitors.
