Ontario Casinos' Revenues Drop

5 February 2004

ONTARIO – As reported by the Toronto Star: "Lady luck is not smiling on Ontario's gambling industry as she once did, Economic Development and Trade Minister Joe Cordiano says.

"…Revenue at Ontario's border casinos in Windsor and Niagara Falls are off $160 million (US$119.52 million), and racetrack slot machines are ringing up less cash. However, Casino Rama, near Orillia, is bucking the trend so far this fiscal year and is up slightly.

"…Officials blame a number of things — last year's SARS outbreak, security delays at the U.S. border, the blackout last August, competition from relatively new casinos on the U.S. side in Niagara Falls and Detroit and the climb in the value of the Canadian dollar…"
