Ontario casino workers ready to walk off18 April 2007ONTARIO – As reported by the Brantford Expositor: "City casino workers are poised to walk off the job if a first contract isn't settled by 11:59 tonight. "Representatives of Ontario Lottery and Gaming, the casino's operator, and the Canadian Auto Workers, which represents casino employees, began meeting at 8 a.m. Tuesday, said one worker, who asked not to be identified. Talks were to continue around the clock until a deal is reached. " 'If there's a tentative contract at 11:59 p.m., there's no strike but, if there's no contract, we're walking,' said the worker. "The casino -- now known as OLG Brantford -- was certified by the CAW almost a year ago. The new contract is expected to cover up to 800 employees. "…The main local issues, according to the casino worker, are seniority rights and rotating shifts for part-time employees. "The worker said that OLG stripped seniority rights from employees, except for how they affect vacations. Any senior worker who moves to a new department, for whatever reason, must go to the bottom of the seniority list…" |
