Ontario allocates funds to help problem gamblers

ONTARIO, Canada -- As reported by The Toronto Sun: "Ontario is placing a $38- million bet on a plan to help problem gamblers.

"'The government is committed to reducing the negative consequences of problem gambling,' says ministry of health and long term care spokesman David Jensen.

"Of the $38.6 million designated, $23.6 million was allocated to treatment, $9 million for prevention and $4 million to research. The province funds 49 agencies across Ontario to offer local treatment, education and prevention services.

"Dr. Nigel Turner, a scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, says Ontario has one of the best funded problem gambling treatment programs in the world.

"NDP health critic Frances Gelinas says it's imperative for problem gamblers to be identified at much faster rates..."
