Online Campaign Aims to Eliminate Nova Scotia VLTs

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia – As reported by the Canadian Press: "When actor John Dunsworth joined a new campaign to rid Nova Scotia of its video lottery terminals, he was taken aback by the story of one man he interviewed for a TV program he's producing about gambling addiction.

"Dunsworth, himself a VLT addict, told a news conference Tuesday that the man lost $500,000 on the machines over a four-year period.

"…Similar stories were told at the news conference as a citizens' group launched an online campaign to get rid of all VLTs in the province.

"…Premier John Hamm announced earlier this month that his Tory government will pull the plug on 1,000 of the 3,200 VLTs located in 480 establishments with liquor licences.

"Players will also face a curfew that will force owners to turn the machines off at midnight. The province's casinos in Halifax and Sydney are exempt from that provision…"
