Oneida Nation Council Approves Land Settlement

15 December 2004

Las Vegas Sun

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The General Tribal Council of Wisconsin's Oneida Nation has overwhelmingly approved a plan that could end a long-standing land dispute in the state of New York.

The meeting at which the vote took place Monday was closed to the public, but tribal leaders said more than 700 Oneida members came and 97 percent endorsed the settlement in a voice vote.

The proposed settlement gives the Oneidas 1,000 acres of land in New York, hunting and fishing rights and the opportunity to build a casino in the Catskills.

"The governor of New York has agreed to make express efforts to move this legislative process forward at the state level and then continue along at the federal level," Oneida chairwoman Tina Danforth said.
