One Ticket Wins $340 Million Powerball Jackpot20 October 2005UNITED STATES -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- The record breaking $340 million Powerball jackpot was won on a single ticket in Oregon. The winner will now have to decide between the 29-year, 30-payment annuity, and the cash option worth $164,410,058.03. The winner will have 60 days after their ticket is validated to make that decision. The numbers drawn Wednesday night were 7, 21, 43, 44, 49 and the Powerball was 29. The Power Play multiplier was 5. In addition to the incredible grand prize that was won, the new Match 5 Bonus Pool reached a whopping $32 million. This will give each of the 49 match 5 white ball winners an additional $653,492 cash bonus besides the normal prize of $200,000 plus any Power Play winnings. Forty-seven lucky players in the states of Arizona (4), Colorado (2), DC (2), Iowa, Indiana (2), Kansas, Kentucky (3), Louisiana (3), Minnesota (4), Missouri (3), New Hampshire, Oregon (4), Pennsylvania (10), Rhode Island, South Carolina (3), Vermont, Wisconsin, and West Virginia won a total of $853,492. Two additional winners at the Match 5 prize level in Kentucky and the US Virgin Islands also very wisely purchased the Power Play option multiplying their winnings 5 times for a total of $1 million cash! This on top of their share of the Match 5 Bonus Pool gave these two players a total cash prize of $1,653,492. Two hundred forty-one players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000. Twenty-five additional players who won at this prize level also purchased the Power Play and had their $10,000 winnings multiplied by 5 to $50,000! More than 357,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prizes by 5 Wednesday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you multiply your Powerball winnings from 2 to 5 times, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier. Excluding the jackpot, 4,412,468 players across the nation won a total of more than $42.1 million in prizes. The jackpot for the Saturday, October 22nd drawing will be $15 million with a cash option of $7.3 million. Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels. Players purchased more than $179.4 million in tickets (Powerball plus Power Play) between Sunday and Wednesday night. The lotteries sold more than $2 billion in Powerball tickets in FY05. That translates into more than $600 million for worthwhile state projects. |
