Omaha Casino Plan Not Definite

LINCOLN, Nebraska – As reported by the Omaha World-Herald: "When state lawmakers talk about letting casinos into Nebraska, they almost always point to Omaha as the most likely site for at least one casino.

"Omaha is near three Council Bluffs riverboat casinos; it's the state's most populous area, and two Nevada casino companies - most notably the Venetian casino and resort - have expressed an interest in Omaha.

"Yet, as state senators close in on a casino proposal for the November ballot, leaders of the pro-gambling effort say an Omaha casino isn't a foregone conclusion.

"…Lawmakers on Wednesday voted 31-14 in favor of a two-casino compromise, clearing a significant hurdle to putting a proposed constitutional amendment before voters in November.

"…Lawmakers supporting casinos on Wednesday collected one more vote than the three-fifths majority needed to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot.

"…Sen. Ray Aguilar of Grand Island said he was disappointed that the Legislature would not include horse tracks in its casino proposal. He said Fonner Park has been a good corporate citizen in Grand Island and should be allowed to compete…"
