Olympian skates at Mohegan Sun Arena

24 October 2007

UNCASVILLE, Connecticut -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Olympic silver medalist Brian Orser announced today that he will perform a very special tribute to his mother and grandmother, both of whom died of heart disease in the nationally televised "Mrs. Dash presents Skate for the Heart' show October 27th in Mohegan Sun Arena. The show will broadcast on NBC on January 13th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.

Tickets for Mrs. Dash Skate for the Heart are still available at Mohegan Sun Box Office and through ticketmaster and are priced at $125.00, $75.00, $50.00 and $35.00. Ticketmaster customers may log on to ticketmaster.com, call any Ticketmaster Charge by Phone number; or visit any Ticketmaster outlet.

Orser, who captured the silver medal in the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo and won a second silver medal four years later in the famous "Battle of the Brians' against Brian Boitano in Calgary in 1988, made a special effort to perform in this show because he felt it was a special way to honor his mother and grandmother. Throughout the televised show, there will be several public service announcemenst designed to inform viewers about heart disease and ways to prevent it. He will skate to a live musical performance by Celtic Woman to the song, "The Blessing.'

"The Mrs. Dash Skate for the Heart show is giving me the opportunity to honor my family who lost their lives to heart disease,' Orser said. "My hope is that when people watch this show they will not only enjoy a wonderful evening of skating but increase their awareness of heart disease.'

Over the years the Canadian champion has entertained skating fans throughout the world, skating in various shows, including "Nutcracker on Ice' and touring with "Stars on Ice' with other legendary skaters such as Scott Hamilton and Kristi Yamaguchi. But lately, Orser, 45, has focused more on other people's skating careers. He has been coaching one of his top pupils, South Korea's young sensation, Kim Yu-Na. Orser does, however, plan to perform when his schedule allows.

Celtic Woman features four female Irish vocalists: Chlok Agnew, Lisa Kelly, Srla Fallon, newcomer Lynn Hilary as well as a young violinist Mairiad Nesbitt. The women are led by the very gifted David Downes (Musical Director, Conductor, Composer and Arranger), who previously worked as musical director for one of the biggest musical dancing hits, "Riverdance.' Celtic Woman has become wildly popular. The group's Celtic Woman album went platinum and spent 83 weeks at # 1. Celtic Woman's A New Journey CD also went platinum and its DVD went double platinum.

Among the skaters in this star-studded cast are Olympic gold medalist Ekaterina Gordeeva, World Bronze Caryn Kadavy, six-time Canadian champion Jennifer Robinson, U.S. Champion Rudy Galindo, World Champion and six-time U.S. Champion Todd Eldredge, eight-time Briti sh Champion Steven Cousins, Olympic bronze medalist Jozef Sabovcik, and two-time World ice dancing silver medalists Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon. Each one of these skating stars has a personal and, unfortunately, tragic, connection to heart disease.
