Oklahoma Tribe Wants Support for New York Casino

NEW YORK – As reported by the New York Post-Standard: "The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma has its eye on more than building a high-stakes bingo hall in Aurelius.

"The tribe is also seeking local political support to gain a Class III gaming compact to construct and operate a full-scale casino on an undisclosed site in the Cayuga Indian land-claim area around the northern end of Cayuga Lake.

"'If everything went our way and we get recognition as an in-state tribe, I don't see why there would be any reason why we wouldn't build a Class III casino in the land-claim area. All that means is a bigger place, more jobs locally and a greater profit margin,' said Scott Wood, a lawyer from Tulsa, Okla., who is on the tribe's Business Council.

"…The Seneca-Cayugas are willing to share a percentage of the gaming profits from the bingo hall and casino with the local municipalities, Wood said. The bingo hall would create 300 jobs and the casino would generate 1,500 jobs.

"…The Seneca-Cayugas, like any Indian tribe, need federal and state approval to build a Class III casino in New York. The tribe is also jockeying to build a casino in the Catskills or possibly in Rochester, but Gov. George Pataki has said he will not negotiate a casino compact with any out-of-state tribe…"
