Oklahoma Tribe Eyes New York Casino

NEW YORK – As reported by the Albany Times-Union: "Leaders of an Oklahoma tribe are exploring becoming partners in a stalled project to create a casino at Monticello Raceway, potentially cutting their New York brethren out of the project.

"The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma and the Pataki administration met privately Tuesday. The meeting came as Sullivan County officials complain that deals between Gov. George Pataki and tribes have failed to gel three years after a law was signed allowing three Native American casinos to be built in the Catskills. It also comes as the Legislature and Pataki look for revenues from such casinos to help balance the state budget.

"…Although the tribal leaders declined to discuss their business in Albany, sources say the discussion included a proposal for the tribe to replace the New York Cayugas as partners with Empire Resorts on a proposed $500 million casino at the horse track in Monticello.

"…The Oklahoma tribe is represented in Albany by lobbyist and former attorney general Dennis Vacco.

"…Some officials in the Catskills blame the Oneidas, operators of Turning Stone Casino in Verona, and the Pataki administration for the delay of casino expansion in Sullivan County…"
