Oklahoma Lawmaker Claims Threats

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma – As reported by the Norman Transcript: "A second member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives claimed Tuesday he was threatened over his opposition to a gaming bill pending in the House.

"Rep. Bill Mitchell, D-Lindsay, said he received a call from an individual Tuesday morning before he left for work at the State Capitol.

"'They said they would see to it that I did not make it into the Capitol,' Mitchell said.

"…An armed member of the Capitol Patrol was posted outside Mitchell's office Tuesday and Mitchell said he was also advised not to meet with supporters of the bill who summoned him from the House floor during session.

"…Monday, Rep. Forrest Claunch, a staunch opponent of gaming in Oklahoma, said he was threatened by someone claiming to be a horseman and had authorized Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents to tap his phone.

"Senate Bill 553, which would authorize gambling machines at three of the state's four horseracing tracks, is strongly supported by a variety of horse racing industry groups throughout the state…"
