Oklahoma Casino Debate Escalates12 October 2004OKLAHOMA – As reported by the KOCO Channel Oklahoma: "Public debate heated up Monday over Oklahoma's upcoming vote on proposals that would and expand gaming and establish a statewide lottery. "State Question 712 is a proposal that seeks to lift restrictions on gaming at Indian casinos and to allow the limited use of gaming machines at the state's horse tracks. Part of the proceeds from the gaming money would go toward funding education and compulsive-gambling treatment programs. "Another proposition, State Question 705, seeks to establish a state lottery. The proceeds would provide additional funding for education, which would be placed directly in a 'lockbox' established by law. "…People who support the measures say gambling is already active in Oklahoma at close to 80 tribal casinos and generates millions of dollars per year for sovereign Indian nations. "…Rep. Forrest Claunch, R-Midwest City, is a longtime opponent of expanded gaming in the state. "…'The government shouldn't look for ways to take money away from people by advertising that if you'll just go lose money, we can prosper,' Claunch said. "Claunch also lashed out against Gov. Brad Henry, whom he challenged to a debate on gaming…" |
