Ohio's Lawmakers Won't Bet on Slots

OHIO – As reported by the Wheeling News-Register: "Ohio's lawmakers aren't yet betting on slot machines to solve Ohio's fiscal problems. In fact, the future of gambling in the state is presently stalled before the Ohio General Assembly.

"Legislation that would allow slot machines only at Ohio's seven race tracks was passed last October by the Ohio Senate, but it has yet to pass the Ohio House.

"…A move was made by legislators to place the issue before state voters in November, but the deadline to place state initiatives on the general election ballot is Aug. 4. Legislators would have to meet in special session to meet the deadline, but thus far no such session has been scheduled.

"'It's nill at this point and probably dead for this year,' said Ohio Rep. John Domenick, D-Smithfield. 'It will probably rise again in some other way next year.'

"…Ohio Sen. Joy Padgett, R-Coschocton, added that Ohio shouldn't gamble its way to prosperity…"
