Ohio Tribe to Present Casino Plans to Governor

OHIO – As reported by the Cincinnati Post: "A Shawnee Indian tribe's proposal to open up to seven casinos in Ohio might go before Gov. Bob Taft's staff as early as this month.

"And a company hired by the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma wants to present its plan to Taft himself in September.

"Taft has been a steadfast foe of expanded gambling in the state and hasn't changed that position.

"…The tribe, which operates a casino in Oklahoma, wants to use threats of reclaiming land as leverage to help persuade Taft to support Shawnee-owned casinos in the Buckeye State.

"…The 1.2 million acres that the tribe might attempt to reclaim -- part of the Symmes Purchase from more than 200 years ago -- starts at the Ohio River and runs between the Greater and Little Miami Rivers to Bellefontaine. That includes a major swath through Hamilton County, and such areas as Indian Hill, Symmes Township and Sharonville.
