Ohio: OSU Board Slams Slots26 September 2006OHIO -- As reported by the Columbus Dispatch: "The Ohio State University Board of Trustees yesterday came out strongly against the Learn and Earn ballot measure that would allow slotmachine gambling in Ohio. "...The constitutional amendment, Issue 3 on the November ballot, would send 30 percent of the money raised through slots into college scholarships that students would earn while in high school, hence the 'Learn and Earn' tag. It would allow seven horse-racing tracks and two downtown Cleveland casinos to operate 31,500 slot machines. "...Trustee Robert H. Schottenstein said Issue 3 'doesn't smell right, feel right or seem fair' and sounds too good to be true. "...OSU's public opposition comes amid reports that Sen. George V. Voinovich pressured the Ohio Board of Regents to oppose Issue 3. The regents would operate the scholarship program if voters approve Learn and Earn. "...Linda Siefkas, spokeswoman for Learn and Earn, said many university officials and trustees in Ohio feel they can't show public support for Issue 3.
