Ohio Governor Still Opposes Video Gambling Plans

COLUMBUS, Ohio – As reported by the NBC 4 Columbus News: "Electronic slot machines on Ohio racetracks would fund college scholarships and future school funding increases, under a proposal lawmakers are resurrecting and want voters to approve in November.

"The proposal is the latest legislative attempt to follow the lead of other states and tap what one estimate says is hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue for Ohio. Gov. Bob Taft said Wednesday he continues to oppose any video gambling plan.

"Taft said documented social problems such as gambling addictions arise wherever casino gambling develops.

"…The plan, unveiled during a private House Republican caucus Tuesday, would channel half the money to a pair of college scholarship programs, 10 percent to early childhood initiatives such as Head Start and 40 percent for public school funding…"
