Ohio casino proposal rejected

CANAL FULTON, Ohio – As reported by the Ohio Beacon Journal: "The months-long, often volatile casino proposal for Northwest Stark County took a fatal blow from Canal Fulton City Council on Tuesday night.

"After an impassioned, `from-the-heart' speech by Mayor John Grogan, the council accepted his recommendation and voted to notify the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma that Canal Fulton is no longer interested and is moving on to other issues.

"Grogan's comments followed a report by City Manager Mark Cozy that 48 percent of the 1,806 surveys sent to residents were returned to him, with 55 percent opposed and 45 percent favoring continued negotiations. Cozy recommended that council consider telling the Shawnee of the survey results `and we are going to support their (the residents) feelings.'…"
