Ohio Casino Foes Vow to Fight

COLUMBUS, Ohio – As reported by the Ohio Beacon Journal: "Two days before gambling proponents are to meet privately in an attempt to agree on a strategy to create casinos in Ohio, the leader of an opposition group that twice successfully fought efforts to expand gambling vowed a three-peat this year.

"David Zanotti, Ohio Roundtable president, said Tuesday his coalition was back, stronger than ever, and prepared to convince voters that casinos are not the cure to the economic problems facing the state.

"Zanotti led campaigns in 1990 and 1996 to oppose statewide ballot issues that would have allowed casino gambling into the state. He also has been outspoken each time the legislature has entertained the idea of allowing slot machines at the state's seven horse racing tracks.

"...His remarks were made less than a block from the Athletic Club in Columbus, where a three-hour, closed-door meeting among more than 45 participants is scheduled for Thursday.

"Among the invitees are representatives of gambling equipment suppliers, casino operators, horse racing, alcoholic beverage companies, and entertainment parks, as well as Mayors Jane Campbell of Cleveland and Charlie Luken of Cincinnati.

"…Zanotti said the elected officials should not meet privately with gaming interests to make decisions regarding casinos…"
