Officials Worry About Gambling as Asian Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – As reported by the Associated Press: "Soccer officials are worried that illegal gambling could tarnish the upcoming Asian Cup and on Thursday urged governments to do more to combat organized crime syndicates taking bets in the region.

"The secretary-general of the Asian Football Confederation described illegal soccer betting as a 'disease' that has become rampant in Asia, particularly Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, China and Hong Kong.

"Peter Velappan said millions of dollars had been wagered on the recent European Championship despite crack downs in several Asian countries, and fears a similar betting spree on the July 17-Aug. 7 Asian Cup in China…"
