Officials want Casino Niagara's future secure15 August 2007ONTARIO -- As reported by the Niagara Falls Review: "City councillors are putting the pressure on provincial candidates, with an election looming, to secure the long-term future of Casino Niagara. But Liberal MPP Kim Craitor, Conservative challenger Bart Maves and local NDP president Sharon Shearing say the issue has been settled - it should stay open. "...On Monday, Coun. Jim Diodati brought up a four-year-old Review article in which Dalton McGuinty, then Ontario's Opposition leader, said a Liberal government would keep Casino Niagara open permanently. The plan in 1997 had been to use Casino Niagara as a temporary facility until the permanent Fallsview property was built and opened. But in 2003, then-premier Ernie Eves announced his Conservative government would keep both casinos running as permanent operations. McGuinty followed suit. "...There are about 1,100 people working at Casino Niagara and the city and region could lose more than $4 million in lost property taxes if Casino Niagara closed, [Diodati] said. "...McGuinty's office reconfirmed its position Tuesday when contacted by The Review..." |
