Officials Say Kentucky Thoroughbred Industry Falling Behind3 November 2004KENTUCKY -- As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "During a discussion at a University of Louisville-sponsored forum held on Election Day called "Horse Wars Between the States," members of the Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP) said the state needs to address the declining health of the Thoroughbred industry in Kentucky. "Speaker Dan Kenny, a Lexington-based bloodstock agent and board member of KEEP, explained how Kentucky's rich tradition of horse racing was showing an alarming downturn when compared to other racing states. "'The Thoroughbred industry is strong,' stated Kenny, 'but the state has a problem.' "Kenny cited the current trends that jeopardize the state's dominant position in the industry, including the decline in the number of Kentucky-sired foals, and the possible threats to the state's signature race, the Kentucky Derby (G1).
