Officials Promise a Safe and Sane Celebration29 December 2004LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: "It probably won't be cold enough to snow on New Year's Eve, but there's a pretty good chance you're going to get wet if you're outside. "Despite that, there's still plenty of good news for the anticipated 300,000 New Year's Eve revelers expected to crowd the Strip this year. "The midnight fireworks show is supposed to be the most spectacular ever, organizers said. Unlike last year, Las Vegas has not been mentioned time and time again as a possible target for terrorism. "Still, as always, security will be tight. "Las Vegas police said all 2,800 officers, both street and corrections, will be on duty. Most will be on the Strip. "The Strip will be closed to traffic between Sahara Avenue and Russell Road, Sgt. Chris Jones said. The closure, which will include roads that cross the Strip, will happen sometime between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday. "...The National Weather Service was forecasting a 40 percent chance of rain Friday night, with temperatures in the 40s. "That shouldn't affect the fireworks, though, officials said. They are designed to work in the rain. "But if it gets windy, the fireworks could be halted, Leinbach said. "...For those who do not want to deal with trying to park near the Strip or downtown, the Regional Transportation Commission is offering free CAT bus rides on all its routes from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Saturday..." |
