Official: Turning Stone assessment too high20 August 2007NEW YORK -- As reported by the Syracuse Post-Standard: "The assessed value of Turning Stone Resort and Casino is too high, a federal official has told the town of Verona. "In a letter to the town assessor, James Cason said the town has illegally assessed the resort based on its value as a casino property. That violates the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which forbids taxing tribal gambling operations, said Cason, associate deputy secretary of the Department of Interior. "The assessment could affect how much in taxes the Oneida Indian Nation would have to pay before Interior would take Oneida land into trust. The Oneidas would owe about $20 million in back taxes on the casino property based on the current assessment of about $378 million. "...Town officials say they have assessed only the buildings at Turning Stone, not the casino gambling operations..." |
