Official: Singapore Must Tackle Gambling's Social Costs

SINGAPORE: Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan has said that Singapore must be ready to tackle the social costs if it decides to have a casino.

"Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, instead of Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang, will announce the decision on the casino on Monday.

"…Dr Tan saw the wide debate on the issue as being healthy and reflecting well on Singaporeans.

"However, Dr Tan cautioned against dismissing the social costs of having a casino, after a recent government survey showed only two out of 100 gamblers risked being addicted…"
