Odds against Wisconsin casino bill

MADISON, Wisconsin – As reported by the Janesville Gazette: "The Ho-Chunk and Chippewa haven't agreed on much lately.

"But they agree Assembly Bill 205 is a bad idea.

"AB 205 would pave the way for Wisconsin's Legislature to join Gov. Jim Doyle in approving off-reservation casinos, such as the one being proposed for Beloit. Federal law grants the right exclusively to governors.

"Although the Wisconsin Assembly passed the bill, 57-38, Tuesday afternoon, no vote is likely to be scheduled in the Senate-and Doyle would likely veto it.

"…But the bill's chances of becoming law seem dim.

"Senate Majority Leader Judy Robson, D-Beloit, said Tuesday she has no plans to schedule the bill for a Senate vote.

"…Doyle respects the approval process as it stands and does not support the bill, spokeswoman Carla Vigue said…"
