Odds against gamblers, Crown tells court

17 August 2009

AUSTRALIA -- As reported by The Age: "After seeing him gamble for high stakes in Las Vegas, Kerry Packer had a gambler lured to Crown Casino, a court has heard.

"...Crown Casino has mounted its closing argument in a trial against millionaire property developer Harry Kakavas, who claims he was lured to the casino by Crown executives wishing to exploit his pathological addiction.

"Banned from Crown for many years, he was spotted by former Crown owner Kerry Packer gambling millions of dollars in Las Vegas in 2004.

"The court has heard Mr Packer phoned casino executive John Williams to ask why Mr Kakavas wasn't at Crown, and that Mr Williams worked to have Mr Kakavas readmitted.

"Mr Kakavas turned over almost $1.5 billion between June 2005 and August 2006, and is suing the casino for $20 million in losses and about $15 million in damages.

"...Crown is countersuing Mr Kakavas for $1 million he still owes the casino.

"Closing arguments continue today before Justice David Harper..."
